The cumbersome process of obtaining a SIM card in India is set to undergo a significant transformation by 2024, as the Department of Telecom (DoT) issues a notification signaling the elimination of paper-based Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures. This initiative aims to streamline the often time-consuming and tedious task of acquiring a SIM card, traditionally involving the submission of various documents, IDs, and photographs.
Telecommunication companies (telcos) have long voiced concerns about the cost-intensive nature of paper-based KYC processes and see the digital shift as a means to mitigate SIM fraud instances. The reliance on paperwork has been a longstanding inconvenience for consumers, requiring proof of identity, proof of address, and photograph attachments to the customer acquisition form (CAF).
The forthcoming digital onboarding process, as detailed in the notification, is yet to be fully disclosed. However, it is anticipated that the Aadhaar-based verification system, which has gained popularity for its quick and seamless nature, will likely be an option. Aadhaar enables users to authorize their identity through biometric details, expediting the issuance of a new SIM card within minutes and activation by the operator in just a few hours—a considerable improvement over the 24-hour timeframe associated with traditional paper-based verifications.
The shift to digital processes is expected to enhance the overall customer experience, allowing telcos to concentrate on service quality rather than being preoccupied with administrative tasks such as form printing and document copying. This move not only aligns with the broader digitization trends but also addresses security concerns associated with fraudulent activities facilitated by fake documents during the issuance of prepaid SIM cards. As the digital era unfolds, the transition promises a more efficient and user-friendly experience for individuals obtaining SIM cards in India.
